Dixie Fire mushrooms into second-largest wildfire in California history

Authorities said in a Sunday update that overnight smoke made it hazardous for some crews to drive. Clearing skies on the northeast perimeter had “led to more dynamic fire behavior,” while the smoke’s shade elsewhere has moderated the flames. They said the blaze was 21 percent contained as more than 5,000 people worked to keep it at bay. The smoke has also stymied crews’ ability to fight fire from the air, Zuniga said, leaving those on the ground to spray retardant on mountain ridges and around threatened communities.
