As bad as it looks to see Gebrhiwet celebrating while the bell is ringing — the universal symbol for ONE LAP TO GO! — it’s happened before. Lopez Lomong legendarily won a 5K seven years ago after very similarly kicking too early, and Jenny Simpson did the same thing at a two-mile indoor race in 2014. And like those two, Gebrhiwet is an incredibly accomplished athlete. He’s won two world championship medals and most recently took bronze in the 5,000 at the Rio Olympics.
