Nandita Das is the only Indian filmmaker in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival this year. Her film Manto — on the iconic writer Saadat Hasan Manto — is screened in Un Certain Regard category. The Cannes festival authorities sent letters to both the Russian and Iranian governments to allow Serebrennikov and Panahi respectively to attend the screening of their films. “Cannes festival is full of such episodes,” said Fremaux. “It is wonderful he continues to work against such adversity.”This year, dissent is the warmest colour at Cannes.The writer is a freelance journalist
