Disqualified driver fails to overturn jail sentence for lockdown breach

There are fears jail is not working to deter a man who repeatedly drives while disqualified from breaking the rules, a High Court judge says. Despite those fears, sending Nathan Puhara Te Tau to prison for driving while disqualified was the right call. Te Tau had served two previous prison terms for driving while disqualified. Te Tau appealed his jail term in the High Court, but Justice Francis Cooke said the punishment was not unjust. There needed to be care when increasing sentences for previous offending and Te Tau’s sentence was quite high, the judge said.
