Discover the remnants of the gold rush down southLiz Carlson Hayes Engineering Works and Homestead on a lovely spring day in Central Otago. St Bathans is another gold rush town from the 1860s. One of the best restored historical towns, it's situated next to the stunning Blue Lake, which was manmade during the Gold Rush, and is a great place for a dip in summer. When I am in Central Otago, I make sure to call in for a coffee and big fat slice of cake at the Courthouse Cafe in Alexandra. The writer was partially hosted in Central Otago.
