A suspicious package turned out to be a discarded backpack, say police. The investigation Friday evening had temporarily shut down Vaughan Street around the Law Courts building, from York Avenue to St. Mary Avenue. The area reopened to cars and pedestrians at about 7:30 p.m. once the backpack on the 200 block of Vaughan Street was deemed safe. This latest scare comes after a man lit a backpack on fire in front of the Law Courts building causing a small explosion on Wednesday. Earlier Friday, a suspicious item was found outside the Winnipeg police headquarters but it turned out to be harmless.
