Disability rights advocate Md Saidul Huq to receive Independence Award

Disability rights advocate Md Saidul Huq, whose decades-long work has significantly advanced the rights and opportunities of persons with disabilities in Bangladesh, is set to receive the country’s highest civilian honour—the Independence Award (Swadhinata Puruskar)—this year. Md Saidul Huq has been working for more than 35 years to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities. The organisation has also introduced computer training programmes, vocational and skills development initiatives, and employment support to enhance independence among persons with disabilities. In 2023, the Government of Bangladesh honoured Huq with the Ekushey Padak for his outstanding contributions to social development. Despite decades of achievements, Huq remains committed to continuing his work to ensure greater inclusion, education, and opportunities for persons with disabilities across Bangladesh.
