Din Tai Fung acquitted of copyright violations

The Taipei District Court has acquitted Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐), a restaurant chain famous for its steamed dumplings, of charges that it violated the Copyright Act by redesigning and reproducing copyrighted works in a lawsuit filed by a local company. The court ruled in favor of Din Tai Fung as the plaintiff, Polyright Electronics, failed to offer sufficient evidence attesting to the restaurant chain's alleged illegal practices. In August 2015, Din Tai Fung informed Polyright of its decision to terminate the cooperation contract. But one month later, Polyright found Din Tai Fung had redesigned and reproduced its copyrighted artistic works for trademark registration, without the company's consent. This prompted Polyright to file a copyright infringement lawsuit against Din Tai Fung.
