Digital bills pass second reading in Assembly

The six digital bills are: Electronics Transaction Organisation Restructuring, Data Protection, Cybersecurity, Council of Thailand Digital and Society, Digital ID, and Electronics Transaction Officer. The government has argued that the bills together would drive a move toward “digital government” through developing the required infrastructure, including government Big Data, a data centre, cloud services, and one- stop service. The legislation would also help to reduce the investment duplication among governmental organisations in Big Data, security and data protection. It would also result in creation of a Central Data Centre for the government. Some aspects of the bill have drawn strong criticism, with opponents arguing they infringe on people’s privacy and freedom of speech.
