Philadelphia would become the first major city in the nation to levy a special tax on sodas and sugary drinks. An avowed Diet Coke connoisseur, Landers was not shy about sharing her outright opposition to a proposed 1.5-cent-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks in the City of Philadelphia. Then, Philadelphia could become Ground Zero in a new version of the costly cola wars, with the legal fees eating up more of that soda tax money originally earmarked to benefit the city's children.
