Devastating fire turned into open home to teach public safety

Families came in droves for an open home in Invercargill on Sunday, but it wasn't exactly property investment they had on their minds. Fire and Emergency NZ organised an open home viewing of a severely damaged Glengarry house that caught on fire last Monday, to offer a visual education on fire safety. The home had working smoke alarms and everyone managed to escape safely, he said. They previously didn't have smoke alarms in their home but were now getting some installed. Kāinga Ora Southland area manager Gill Brown, who helped organised the open day, said it showed how important it was to have working smoke alarms.
