Detained migrants riot, on hunger strike in Libya

Detained migrants riot, on hunger strike in Libyafrom AHMED ZAYED in Tripoli, LibyaTRIPOLI, (CAJ News) – CRISIS-torn Libya has lurched into new disaster after riots and hunger strikes by refugees and asylum-seekers that are held at horrible detention centres. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that more than 8 000 refugees and migrants are detained in the country. UNHCR said it was understandable that refugees and asylum-seekers detained in Libya were frustrated. “UNHCR, as a matter of principle, opposes detention of refugees and asylum-seekers,” a UNHCR spokesperson stated. Libya is a gateway to Europe for mostly African migrants seeking greener pastures overseas.
