Raila was in the country to grace the memorial service of the country's vice president, the late Saulos Chilima. Leaders and citizens gathered at the Bingu National Stadium to pay their last respects to their fallen compatriot. Raila had earlier addressed his message of condolence to President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawian people. The late Saulos Chilima's memorial service was held in the Bingu National Stadium on Sunday, June 16, ahead of his burial the following day. The politician and economist served as Malawi's vice president for ten years; between 2014 to 2019, and 2020 until his death.
