A Caroll St home in Palmerston North was the scene of a controlled burn by Fire and Emergency on Saturday. Manawatū's volunteer firefighters have had their first taste of the ferocity of a full-blown house fire in a Palmerston North training exercise. Crowds gathered to watch a derelict house on Carroll St burn to the ground on Saturday, with smoke from the blaze drifting across the Manawatū city. The burn started early in the morning and was extinguished by 2pm, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said. Carroll St is a hot spot for controlled burns, with owners donating several old uninhabitable houses to save on demolition costs.
