Derelict, abandoned boats 'increasing problem' in Tasman waters

Derelict boats are causing headaches for authorities with three removed from coastal Tasman waters over summer. “This vessel was lifted out of the water at Motueka and then water blasted,” Humphries says in a report. “Sadly, it seems to be an increasing problem that people are abandoning their boats, probably due to the increasing costs of ownership (and the increasing age of the owners),” Humphries says. Deputy mayor Stuart Bryant asked what lengths the council went to ensure derelict boats were disposed of properly. Humphries said the harbourmaster team “know just about every derelict boat in the district intimately” and the identity of the owners.
