Both U.S. presidential candidates are trying to out-muscle one another and prove to Americans that, if elected, they will be tougher on China. Neither country should see any real advantage from a major confrontation but neither shows any appetite for compromise. The Chinese leadership believes that their authoritarian system of governance is the model for the future. The onus is on the U.S and its allies to prove them wrong.
