Depression is known to have effects on the brain and cognition, both in the present and over the long term. A new study in the journal Neurology finds that depression may indeed change the brain in some ways, but its effects on thinking and memory seem to be less profound. What the study does more than anything is illustrate the mechanism by which depression exerts its effects. The participants were 1,111 people taking part in the Northern Manhattan Study, a long-term neurological study of older people living in upper Manhattan. There was a connection between depression and overall brain volume.
