Murlidhar Meena, a garlic cultivator, was suffering from depression for the past few days as he was under heavy debt after taking loan from Kisan Credit Card and other banks. He was also facing marital problems as his wife along with their children had moved to her parents’ house, a day prior to the incident. What proved to be the last straw was that he was forced to sell his produce at Baran mandi at very low price last night. After returning from the mandi, he had called his wife and children before consuming the poison. Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Prabhu Lal Saini on Monday claimed that no farmer in the state has committed suicide due to financial reasons.
