Demystifying ‘sandras’ of the Garden City

These are just some of the interesting facts about the city that were revealed during the release of the book Nature in the City: Bengaluru in the Past, Present and Future , authored by Harini Nagendra, Professor of Sustainability at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru. Mr. Guha said the book changes the ‘anti-urban bias’ that exists in environmental activism, also offering an inter-disciplinary approach to it. Her insights into the perception of nature by people today – ‘recreational and utilitarian’ – also saw many nods among the audience. But Bendakaluru, now Bengaluru, which in turn was Bangalore earlier, has seen as many changes in landscape and ecology as its name. Releasing her book were playwright Girish Karnad and historian Ramchandra Guha, both ‘old’ Bengalureans.
