The site of the protest was no more than 30 or 40 yards from the enclosed lawn of the White House grounds. A similar event has not occurred there in years; it was not clear if the president and his family were in the White House at the time. At the earlier White House demonstration, some protesters clashed with police, and a spokesman for the White House confirmed it was placed under lockdown as the demonstration grew outside. A clash occurred with police shortly after demonstrators entered Lafayette Square, across from the White House. ADThe group left the White House area around 8 p.m. before returning later in the evening.
