Demolition put to stop as 100-year-old structure discovered in Shek Kip Mei reservoir

A demolition project at the service reservoir in Shek Kip Mei's Wo Chai hill, officially known as Sham Shui Po Fresh Water Break Pressure Tank, has been called off, after what was said to be 100-year-old roman style structures was discovered on site. Sham Shui Po District Councilor Kalvin Ho Kai-ming posted on his Facebook account this afternoon saying that they have inspected the project site after receiving reports from citizens about the discovery. Ko wrote that some water pipes on site shown markings written “1909” on them, which was believed to be installed for over 100 years, which was 30 years older than the Water Supplies Department’s estimation. Ko had since requested the department to halt the demolition immediately, saying he will put forward a bill to the District Council in January discussing the issue. The reservoir on top of Bishop Hill in Shek Kip Mei was earlier abandoned due to structural issues, the area is popular among Hong Kong residents for morning exercises and as a hiking spot.-Photo: Kalvin Ho Kai-ming Facebook
