Running for president can be a brutal, unforgiving business, as a select group of Democrats illustrated this week by dropping out of the race. Their painful experience suggests the large primary field is moving into a winnowing phase, even before the first vote is cast. In fact, the winnowing may become even more pronounced next week, when the deadline to qualify for the next Democratic presidential debate arrives, with only six candidates clearing the bar so far.
