Democrats Advance Plan to Make South Carolina First Primary State

WASHINGTON—Democrats said Friday after a key committee endorsed President Biden’s proposed plan to allow the first 2024 primary to be held in South Carolina, followed by Nevada and New Hampshire. The change would reduce the importance of New Hampshire, the traditional site of the United States’ first presidential primary. Joan Dowdell of New Hampshire conferred with Carroll Fowler of South Carolina ahead of a Democratic vote on proposed changes to the party’s core system. Of about 30 members, only members from Iowa and New Hampshire voted against. Despite objections, the calendar change had broad support from committee members, many of whom were supporters of the president and his inner circle.
