Delta on way for lower South Island, residents warned to get ready

Photo: Getty ImagesEvery southern household should have a plan in case someone living there contracts Covid-19, the Southern District Health Board says. Vaccination — which statistics suggested reduced hospitalisation by 90% — and other well-established public health measures such as social distancing and mask use were the main ways the public could contribute, Dr Lloyd said. However, people also needed to give some thought to how well prepared they were for when Delta arrived, he said. Public health and primary healthcare were ready to manage cases in the community, and the region’s hospitals had planned for cases for many months, Dr Lloyd said. An "unmitigated" outbreak with no health restrictions could result in 210 deaths over a year, while "loose" public health measures would approximately halve that.
