Under threat from the Taliban, a first group of Afghan interpreters arrived on U.S. soil. They will stay at a hotel at an Army base in Fort Lee, Va., for about a week before being resettled permanently. Many of the newly arrived interpreters have long been targets of the Taliban for their cooperation with U.S. troops. Many more are still trapped as Taliban fighters tighten their grip around rural areas. The incident, which killed two crew members, was apparently the latest salvo in a maritime shadow war between the countries, and the first attack known to have killed civilians.
