Delhi HC rejects plea to bring PM CARES Fund under RTI Act

Delhi High Court on Wednesday rejected a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking directions to bring the PM CARES Fund under the ambit of Right to Information (RTI) Act for more transparency. The PIL referred to media reports that the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund) has refused to divulge information under the RTI Act, 2005 by claiming that the fund is not a "public authority" within the ambit of Act. Petitioner also raised concern as to why should there be any secrecy, as the website also states that persons who manage PM CARES Fund shall have no personal interest. The petition further said that in two months the amount collected in PM-Cares Fund stands somewhere around Rs 10,000 crore. These funds have been compulsorily donated into the fund, the PIL claimed.
