Delay reporting Ontario boxer suspensions threatens fighter safety

The Muhammad Ali Boxing Safety Act gives commissions 48 hours to report suspensions to Fight Fax, a centralized database of fighter records and suspensions. Ontario has been considered a leader in boxing safety for years. Because commissions and promoters operate independently, they rely on Fight Fax records to help them avoid putting suspended fighters in the ring. But Herrera’s suspension didn’t appear on Fight Fax for seven weeks, raising questions about fighter safety and the possibility compromised fighters could have returned to the ring prematurely. If a suspension isn’t listed anywhere, a promoter could inadvertently hire a boxer who isn’t eligible to fight.
