Defence ministry awards Rs 6,311 crore Indian Navy project to PSU


To build eight anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft for the Indian Navy, the Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract worth Rs 6,311.32 crore to indigenous company Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), thus giving a major boost to the 'Make in India' campaign. The ministry stated that a request for a proposal was issued by the Indian Navy to Defence Public Sector Undertakings and Indian Private Shipyards in April 2014, with GRSE emerging as the successful bidder for design, construction, and supply of the eight anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft. These anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft are designed for a deep displacement of 750 tonne, speed of 25 knots and complement of 57 and capable of full-scale sub-surface surveillance of coastal waters, SAU and coordinated ASW operations with aircraft. In addition, the vessels shall have the capability to interdict and destroy sub-surface targets in coastal waters, the ministry stated. The GRSE is currently handling major projects for Indian Navy like to make three stealth frigates for under P17A project, anti-submarine warfare corvettes, landing craft utilities, four survey vessels and Fast Patrol Vessels for Indian Coast Guard.
