The Defence Force was called to deal with a “potentially dangerous substance” found by a resident in Te Aroha West in the Matamata-Piako district. A Defence Force spokesperson confirmed the unit attended an address in Te Aroha and recovered a small quantity of picric acid which was destroyed through a controlled demolition. It was widely used in early forms of medicine and medical supplies, including on gauze pads, and as an antiseptic.
