Applications to join the military have shot up as Kiwis stare down the barrel of a bleak job market. One in five New Zealand Defence Force staff earn more than $100,000, Stuff reported in 2019. Fourteen per cent of those senior staff earn more than $200,000 annually, according to the Defence Force annual report released in 2019.
