Three decades of missing and murdered Indigenous women amounts to a “Canadian genocide”, a leaked landmark government report has concluded. While the number of Indigenous women who have gone missing is estimated to exceed 4,000, the report admits that no firm numbers can ever be established. For years, activists and Indigenous peoples have pushed for a government inquiry into the high number of Indigenous women who have either gone missing or been killed. In order to produce the report on the murdered Indigenous women, the inquiry held 24 hearings across the country. At least 2,380 people attended, including the family members of those who had been killed or gone missing.
