Deborah Hay takes on plum role of Nora from A Doll’s House, but with a twist

A Doll’s House became a cause célèbre and is now considered a milestone in the evolution of modern drama — and the role of Nora a plum acting challenge. Nora, played by Deborah Hay, left, and maid Anne Marie, played by Kate Hennig, have a complicated relationship in A Doll's House, Part 2, Hay says. “What I find so amazing and frustrating about A Doll’s House is that we see Nora awaken to the fact that she’s lived an entirely unconscious life, but she has no idea who she’ll become,” says Hay. “Anne Marie raised Nora; she is in many ways her mother, yet there is a difference in class and freedom between them. There is an inequality that still exists … a lot of guilt there,” given that in the intervening years Anne Marie has raised Nora’s children, too.
