European plane maker Airbus said in July 2016 that it would slash production of its A380. The plane has been a massive hit on the air show circuit, but airline executives are less enamored as they worry about filling the more than 500 seats. Photo: George Downs/The Wall Street Journal (Originally published July 13, 2016)The demise of the A380, the largest commercial liner ever built, has left a superjumbo-sized hole in the aircraft market. Airbus said earlier this month that it will stop assembling the A380 in 2021, following the cancellation of a big share of the few remaining orders for the 555-seat jet. This is a bitter pill to swallow for the European giant, but it is also an opportunity.
