Without warning, a huge chunk of rock the size of an apartment building fell off the face of El Capitan in Yosemite national park. There are numerous reports from the rock climbers on the wall and nearby, with an estimated 30 climbers on El Capital during the rockfall. El Capitan is a cornerstone in the rock climbing world and is one of the most famous rock walls in the world. It gained recent notoriety after Alex Honnold became the first climber to free solo the 3,000 feet El Capitan wall, no ropes, no mechanical support. This most likely is the process that resulted in the eventual deadly rockfall at El Capitan.
