JAKARTA, Indonesia — A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the popular tourist destination of Lombok, east of Bali, on Sunday, killing at least 10 people and damaging many buildings, Indonesian officials said. “We jumped out of our beds to avoid anything falling on our heads,” said Jean-Paul Volckaert, who was woken by the quake while at the Puncak Hotel near Senggigi on the island of Lombok. “The water in the pools was swaying like a wild sea,” he said by telephone, though he said he saw no damage nearby. The quake was centered in the northern part of Lombok, about 31 miles northeast of the city of Mataram, Indonesia, the United States Geological Survey said. It was followed by dozens of aftershocks.
