And, finally, will eVTOL aircraft, whether humanly or autonomously piloted, ever be able to get over the hump of safety concerns? In 2016, according to Federal Aviation Administration data, there were just 0.51 fatal accidents per 100,000 helicopter flight hours in this nation. But the developers do need to ratchet back today’s over-hyped expectations as to the timing and early capabilities of eVTOL technology. eVTOL technology does, in fact, hold a great deal of promise for the future. But in light of Monday’s helicopter crash and all the hurdles still to be cleared, the technology’s overly enthusiastic developers and investors risk becoming their own worst enemies.
