Liberty presented an outline to the teams this year that had three main thrusts: Better racing, louder, more powerful engines and budget caps. Although there was consensus among the teams that the proposal is positive, it’s by no means a done deal. Late last month, the universal gearbox planned for 2021 and beyond was nixed by FIA’s World Motor Sport Council. The about face came after FIA agreed with teams’ assertion that cost savings related to gearboxes could be found elsewhere.
