Beginning Jan. 1, some DeSoto employers will not be able to ask about criminal history on initial job applications under a “Ban the Box” policy put in place by the City Council in April. It comes down to second chances, said DeSoto Mayor Rachel Proctor in the release. The Fair Chance Ordinance does not prevent employers from running background checks, or asking about criminal history later during the hiring process. Prior to passing the ordinance, the city conducted outreach that included a survey of area businesses and residents. DeSoto will be safer because of it.”Violations will first incur written warnings with potential fines of $500.
