David v Jacinda: Hey, Government, stand aside for innovators123rfOPINION: Government regulation and outdated thinking threaten to put brakes on technology and innovation. Our regulations need to be flexible, simple, and non-prescriptive from the outset. Uber's safety features involve GPS tracking, automatic recording of driver and passenger information, and a two-way rating system – safety features unimaginable when taxi regulations were last reformed (in 1989). Traditional taxi companies, threatened by competition, complained about how Uber seemed to operate under its own set of rules. Consumers need choice, but while we're at it, they need assurance that we have standards and protections.
