PETALING JAYA: Notification of data breaches should be made mandatory, while companies and other entities should be more transparent when they occur, says the Malaysian Bar. It also said that the findings of ongoing investigations into the massive data breach first reported in October should be made public. He said mandatory breach notification should be implemented to ensure that when there is a breach of personal data, the relevant entity would be obliged to issue a notification of the breach. He also said that companies and authorities holding personal data should act transparently in stances of breaches. The Personal Data Protection Act 2010 that was implemented in 2013 was the first step towards protecting personal data, Varughese noted.
