If that sounds like a movie that’s worthy of your time and money, skip the over-long and bafflingly plotted Star Wars: The Last Jedi and treat yourself to a real hero’s journey, the magnificent Darkest Hour. I can’t point to $300+ million in box offices grosses as proof that Darkest Hour is worth your while. But unlike The Last Jedi, Darkest Hour has held onto and steadily built a growing audience. After opening in November to North America’s 12th highest per screen average of the year, Darkest Hour chugged along for a month in limited release before finally widening to 806 screens on Friday. Anthony McCarten’s taut screenplay, Joe Wright’s skillful direction, and especially, gloriously, Gary Oldman’s magnificent performance make Darkest Hour as thrilling and nail-biting a superhero movie as any you’ll ever see on the big screen.
