In a stunning act of self-preservation, a crayfish destined for dinner went on to live another day. Weibo member Jiuke documented the crayfish visibly clip off its own claw in order to heroically escape death by boiling. At time of writing, the video had been watched 2.4 million times on social media. The crayfish in question was just one of many in a hot pot being served at a restaurant in China. So our hero’s self-severed claw will likely be regained, but the ethics of boiling crustaceans alive in the first place will continue to be a hotly debated topic.
