Behind the same lecterns in the East Room, Trump and Macron shared a man hug with the US president declaring, “I like him a lot.” Trump and Merkel engaged only in stiff handshakes. May was the first foreign leader to visit Trump as president but things have cooled since then. Trump’s one-day “working visit” to the UK on 13 July falls short of the state visit once promised.
