BIRMINGHAM, England—Damian Warner set a Canadian record in the heptathlon Saturday at the world indoor athletics championships, but came up five points short of a gold medal. Warner’s title fight with France’s Kevin Mayer came down to the final event, the 1,000 metres. Warner posted the best time — two minutes, 37.12 seconds, more than two seconds quicker than Mayer — but the gap wasn’t quite enough. Mayer finished with 6,353 points while Warner had 6,348. Earlier, Tomas Walsh of New Zealand broke a 31-year-old world indoors athletics championship record to win the shot put.
