The recent mild weather tricked the yellow flowers into coming out early - after temperatures reached a balmy 15C in the first two weeks of December. However, freezing conditions are on their way, with an amber health alert in place across parts of the UK. An amber cold health alert has been issued for the North East and North West of England from 8pm on Sunday to 12pm on January 5.

The agency also issued a yellow cold health alert for the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London.
