Some 16,337 appeals overturned a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) decision between January and March - the highest ever in a three-month period. And 74% of the 21,995 PIP cases that went through a tribunal ruled against the DWP - also a record high. The shocking figures come days after we revealed the huge cost of running the appeal system. The government admitted it cost £26.8m to run PIP appeals that ruled against the DWP in 2018 alone. That did not include the cost of appeals for a separate benefit, Employment and Support Allowance - 74% of which now rule against the government too.
