DRC refugees overwhelm struggling ZambiaFrom ARNOLD MULENGA in Lusaka, ZambiaLUSAKA, (CAJ News) – ZAMBIA and financially-struggling United Nations agencies are battling a swelling number of refugees fleeing the troubled Democratic Republic of Congo in the north. More than 1 800 asylum-seekers have entered Zambia over the past week following escalating tension in the Kasai region in the DRC. This brings the total number of Congolese new arrivals between January and early September to 4 478. Government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees last Friday started moving the Congolese to Nchelenge transit centre, further inland, for onward relocation to Meheba refugee settlement in northwest Zambia. The latest arrivals come amid Zambia battling an influx of other victims uprooted by conflict in Burundi, Rwanda Somalia and Uganda.
