The participants who were drawn from seven member countries in the Eastern Africa region also adopted the Nairobi Declaration. The Declaration establishes national mechanisms for the safety of journalists in Eastern Africa countries. The actors include all the three branches of government, associations of journalists and media workers, lawyers associations, civil society/Human Rights Defenders. "The role of the committee will be to coordinate, mobilise resources, share best practices, support and monitor the progress of the National Safety Mechanisms," Omwoyo said. "Indeed with proper policies and guidelines, this noble initiative will enhance media freedom and access to information in our respective countries.
