PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is committed to combating human trafficking in the country, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic). Dr Ahmad Zahid said this was an increase from only seven convictions in 2015. He said this indicated the strong commitment and co-operation shown by Mapo enforcement agencies like the police, the Immigration, Labour and Customs Departments, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, the courts and the Attorney-General's Chambers. Dr Ahmad Zahid also said that the Government was committed to its obligation to the protection and care of the victims of human trafficking and smuggling according to the principle of human rights. "The Government, through Mapo, remains committed in combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling and we ask all parties to play a more significant part and to relay any relevant information to enforcement agencies," he said.
