DP World Insists On Continued Operations at Berbera Port Amid Somalia-UAE Tensions

MOGADISHU—Dubai-based ports and logistics giant DP World announced on Tuesday its commitment to maintain operations at Berbera Port in Somaliland, despite the Somali government’s recent decision to annul all agreements with the UAE, including crucial port contracts and defense collaborations. This announcement comes at a time of rising tensions in the region, particularly following the Israeli government’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. “DP World is committed to ensuring the effective and safe functioning of the port while promoting trade and economic growth for Somaliland and the broader Horn of Africa,” the company told Reuters. The UAE has established strong economic and security partnerships with Somaliland, underscored by a significant $442 million investment from DP World aimed at developing and managing Berbera Port in the semi-autonomous region. In response to the Somali government’s actions, both Puntland and Jubaland states, which are members of the federal government, issued statements declaring the termination of diplomatic relations with the UAE terminal as unlawful.
